From time to time on Hub City Street Art I'm going to do short posts about local musicians. This band, Rapid Cities, has been playing New Brunswick since their birth at a Brunz basement show a year ago. They've been refining their sound as they've stormed the basement scene. They consider themselves a mixture of indie rock, hardcore, and mathrock. The band members include Anthony Batiatto, Cass McGrath, and John Terry. I recommend enjoying the music with a warm Pabst in hand. If you want to listen to them, check out the band's myspace page at www.myspace.com/rapidcities . When you go to the site make sure to check out the pics. There are some cool shots from train and subway stations.
Somerset St. near Plum.
I always really liked these. They used to be everywhere. Lately you find them mostly in the neighborhood down Somerset St. They seemed to have spawned some other similar stuff like the "Star Spangled" and "Feed This Greed" posters. I actually met the guy who does the Lost Liberty ones in a bar once and it turns out that he started putting them up after he got hassled by customs while coming back into the US from a vacation. If I see him again I'm going to see if I can get an interview for the site.
So I got to check out the Cardboard and Photocopy event at the trainstation. It was pretty awesome. There was a lot of varied stuff from almost lifesized cardboard figurines sitting dejectedly off to the side to some really cool photocopy-art zines that were being handed out. My favorite was the piece of graphic design below. The artist gave me permission to post it and he's supposed to be emailing me a link to his website so people can check it out. The artist's name is Karl Doerrer. You can check out his stuff on either of his web sites: http://dintavian.deviantart.com/ or http://www.geocities.com/dintavian/. The images are of a sim city style screen with a satelite picture of New Brunswick on it. At the bottom are the sim style meters with "sense of dissolutionment", "cardboard boxes", and "photocopy" all increasing.

So I found a cool looking flyer for this event recently and contacted the organizer. They sent over the pic on the left. To be honest I'm not completely sure what to expect based on the picture, but the concept sounds pretty cool. There's something about the phrase "In the mediums of cardboard and photocopy" that makes me need to go check it out. I'm pretty excited about it. The exhibit is supposedly opening at the New Brunswick Train Station from 7pm to 9pm tomorrow, Feb. 23rd. I'll definitely post a follow up about it afterwards.

Central Ave. at Hartwell.
I posted the picture of this one a little larger than the others because the detail is so awesome. It's on a grey utility box where a bunch of streets intersect. If you get a chance, go look at it - it's a great piece. I think I might be on the trail of tracking down the artist. If I do I'll post more about it in the future.
